Artist Statement:

“Art comes from life, art is what we make of it. Life is precious, ubiquitous, beautiful, ugly, cruel and caring, inspiring and terrifying, all of that and more. It is the vision of the artist that chooses the meaning of life, both what we take from it and give to it.

Artist Bio:

Debbie.lee Miszaniec is a Canadian visual artist working from her studio on the edge of Fish Creek Provincial Park in Calgary Alberta Canada, where she lives with her family. Her post-modernist painting practice engages the intersection between lived experience and the influences of art, history, popular culture and social movements. Although her paintings typically employ the traditional media of oil or acrylic on canvas, concept leads her to incorporate diverse media. Since graduating from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2008 she has been involved in a breadth of creative ventures in Calgary, including public commissions, arts writing, teaching, talks, events, exhibitions, volunteerism, and studio painting. Her influences range from the northern renaissance, dutch baroque, german expressionist, to conceptual, pop, neo-expressionist and identity art. Recent exhibitions include shows at Gallery@501, Alberta Society of Artists Gallery, the Women’s Museum of Canada, the Calgary Stampede Western Showcase Art Gallery, CARFAC Alberta’s Shaping Alberta and the at Heritage Park’s museum. She is also the recipient of a Research and Creation Grant (2023) from the Canada Council For The Arts, and an Individual Artist Project Grant (2022) from Calgary Arts Development to support the creation of a series of paintings exploring health and diet culture.  When Debbie.lee Miszaniec is not making art she can often be found reading, nature walking, or simply enjoying the daily practices of life.
